Natives of the Nile Valley constitute the second largest voting bloc in the governorate of Matrouh. To make up for their considerable losses in People's Assembly elections, these residents strived to organise themselves to succeed in Shura Council elections. Some believed it was too late for such an attempt.

His friends and acquaintances call him Abqarino – the Arabised name of Disney character Gyro Gearloose – probably because of technological expertise. His small flat in the Karmouz slum is a makeshift control room for "alternative media."

While calls for civil disobedience on 11 February found receptive ears among many of Matrouh's youth, the older generation rejected them, even though some agreed with the goals behind the call for disobedience. The Salafi movement, which represents the most prominent political force in the governorate, rejected these calls and vowed to punish those who engaged in civil disobedience.

Although intermittently, protests continue in front of the Radio and Television building, dubbed Maspero. Starting with the celebration of the one year anniversary of the January 25 Revolution, these protests included various groups demanding the removal of state media, the handover of power from SCAF to civilian rule.
